Affordable Sushi In Singapore: $13 Sashimi, $22 Platters And Wagyu Bites
Fresh salmon sashimi at $13 for 13 pieces, a $22 mixed platter and Wagyu, salmon belly, prawn nigiri and maki from two affordable sushi stops around Singapore.
A sushi spread with plenty of variety does not have to mean a restaurant-sized bill. I picked up salmon sashimi, a mixed platter and a few interesting sushi sets from 争鲜gogo and DON DON DONKI around Tampines MRT.
At 争鲜gogo, the 13-piece salmon sashimi was $13, working out to just $1 a piece. It tasted really fresh, and I found it comparable to sashimi at some good restaurants. For the price, this was a particularly satisfying find.
The $22 platter brought a wide variety to the table. Alongside the simpler pieces were options that felt a little more premium, including the mayonnaise-topped ones. These were fresh and enjoyable too, making the platter a good way to get several different bites in one order.
DON DON DONKI’s roasted Wagyu and salmon set ($11.90) was the more unusual pick. The beef had a melt-in-the-mouth texture, with truffle adding another flavour to the mix. The salmon belly was fatty and satisfying. The DON DON DONKI rice appears to be akazu-seasoned sushi rice. Akazu is a red vinegar made from sake lees that gives sushi rice its reddish-brown colour and a richer flavour.
The prawn nigiri ($8.90) was good, with succulent, juicy prawns. Different types of roe on top gave each piece a slightly different taste.
The maki ($8.90) had an orange roe coating, with salmon, cucumber, egg and crabstick inside.
Prices above are what I paid for these purchases.
